Raja was the obvious winner in season 3 of Rupaul’s Drag Race. She had style, sophistication and of course had worked with Ty-Ty Banks so trust me, bitch knew what time it was! Raja time was deffo taking over and now that she’s taken the crown and the dough, she has decided that it was time for her to branch out and do music.
Her first single “Diamond Crown Queen” is somewhat of a musical mystery to me. I don’t know exactly what to think of the actual track. It’s a little bit electro, a little bit Donna Summer, a splash of Marilyn Manson, in general… I hate to say this but it’s kind of a hot tranny mess! First of all there is Raja’s voice which is more man on steroids than diamond crowned queen, then there are the lyrics that to be honest, do not bring anything exciting or new to the table. I mean a drag queen singing about how she’s gonna “lick on your trigger” and how “every inch will make you quiver” is something we have heard like a thousand times before.
Things do improve with the visuals. I think this is where Raja excels. She knows how she wants to come across and you can tell that the video had more planning than the actual song probably did. I think that is the main problem here. Raja does not make for a very interesting pop-star sonically, however visually things change.
Who knows where Raja will go from here. Maybe this was a one-off or maybe she has an entire album coming up but one thing is for sure it better have damn good videos to keep this gay’s interest cos the music is just not working for me right now. You know what I think but now judge 4 urself!
