It seems as though Rihanna releases and album every 6 months and most would be annoyed by that, especially if the music quality were crap. Lucky for her, Rihanna’s albums get better and better and with each outing she is clearly defining who she is as an artist.
“Rated R” was the beginning of a new, more mature Rihanna not only in her sound but as well as her lyrics. It was the first entire Ri-Ri album that I enjoyed entirely. It was dark, moody and we got a sense of who she was and what was going on in her life at the time. Then after the moodiness of “Rated R” Rihanna wanted to forget about it all and released “Loud” an album that was fun, very dance-y and a massive, massive hit for her.
Her new album “Talk That Talk” continues the “party” vibe from “Loud” but it gets a whole lot dirtier. Way dirty, XXX-tina kind of dirrty! This is of course a natural progression for her being that she has liked to sing about sex before but never, ever has it been as explicit as on the song “Cockiness (I Love It)” That tune has potty mouth written all over it. In general you get a feel that Rhianna is in the party moment of her life and she is gonna have herself a good ass time. Songs like “Where Have You Been,” ” Watch N’ Learn,” and “We Found Love” are all dance floor gems that will get ya bumpin’ and grindin’ in no time. They are her strong points. Rihanna has been known for a couple of good ballads in her career but it’s not a territory she excels in and her she keeps “ballad time” short and simple with “We All Want Love” a sweet song that is catchy and could be her 2nd HUGE ballad if it were released.
“Talk That Talk” doesn’t break new ground for Rihanna at all but it builds on something that she started a couple of albums back and it feels as though she on the verge of her “signature” album. Some might say that was “Good Girl, Gone Bad” but one song does not make an album. Rihanna wants to make fresh, fun music that will stand the test of time and with this new offering she is proving to be one of (if not the) most consistent female singer out there, releasing music that is exciting, sexy and downright brilliant!
My Rating: 5 Golden spunk spewing cocks!
Listen to: “Where Have You Been”
